Josephine Agatha Brozycki passed away on Tuesday, August 16th, 2011, at The Valley View Center for Nursing Care and Rehabilitation, after receiving Last Rites of the Roman Catholic Church, with several family members at her bedside. The eldest child of Boleslaw “Aleck” Nowicki and Anna Mardas Nowicki, she was born August 14th, 1909 in Great Meadows, New Jersey. Josie was the widow of Joseph J. Brozycki, whom she married on June 18th, 1929.
She was a strong-willed, independent woman with a soft spot for her grandchildren and anyone who was in need. Whether it was providing a place to stay, a meal (or several meals), clothing or transportation, she followed the biblical verse “inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.”
During her life, Josephine was a veritable dynamo, engaging in numerous endeavors, including onion farming, housecleaning, and sewing garments at the Manhattan Shirt factory in Middletown, NY, until moving to the farm homestead on Route 17A in Goshen, where she worked at dairy farming alongside her husband until his death in 1984.
A communicant of St. Joseph’s RC Church in Florida, NY, and a member of the Living Rosary Society, she regularly attended Mass on Sundays and all Holy Days of Obligation until her age and health no longer permitted her to do so. Her faith was a very important part of her life, which she strived to fulfill on a daily basis.
